A few years ago, one of my old gym buddies, who now lives on the other side of the country, called me up. “Hey, we should do Squatober,” to which my response was, “What the hell is that is that a crossfit thing?”
Since 2015, Sorinex (a fitness equipment company) has held two free programs a year: Squatober and Deadcember, which take place in October and December.
How it works:
Sorinex releases the program on Instagram at noon the day before. In October, you squat every Monday through Friday. In December, you deadlift every Monday through Friday.
For the first time this year, Benchuary will be released in February. There will be a new bench press workout every Monday through Friday in February. Now, at this point, you might be asking yourself why the hell I would want to do that.
I am glad you asked; here I am to answer:
Firstly, it's a free workout program; people pay and charge hundreds of dollars for training, and this is completely free. You can get a big chest for free. No one has ever complained about getting too big of a chest.
Secondly, the way I've done Squatober and Deadcember in the past is I recruit a bunch of friends to do it with me. Like my lifting buddy from across the country did to me. Then, being the social butterfly I am, I contact every buddy I have that lifts and the ones that do not; I attempt to recruit, cajole, guilt trip, or do whatever I can to get them in this month-long onslaught of working out. My wife and I love to do these programs together; we rarely have the same workout goals, but this is a fun way for us to work out together, motivate each other, and share joy and misery.
Also, if you're like me and have lived in four different states in the past decade, you probably have friends all over the country or even the world that you haven't spoken to in months, maybe years. This is a way to reconnect. Catch up, talk about a workout, send each other your PRs (personal records).
Thirdly, it is good for you; Sorinex puts out free workout advice and videos on how to do each lift, along with recovery and warm-up videos. Most people set a fitness goal for the new year. Whether they want to put on muscle or lose weight, it usually is a resolution that they do not meet. Most give up in January. Attempting this with your friends is a good way to keep your fitness resolution on track through February, making it more likely that you stick with your habit.
Fourthly, there is a huge online community, so even if you don't have a bunch of friends that want to take this challenge on with you. There is a huge online community that is there for you if your friends won't do it with you. Make friends online; it's probably safe; just don't get catfished or give them money.
At the end of it all. It's a good way to work out and hang out with your friends, physically or digitally. Getting your bench press stronger is never a bad thing. Go to the gym, get swole, and keep on your journey or start it.
Hope to see you Monday all the way to the end of the month.
